About Panvax®H1N1 vaccine
What is Panvax®H1N1 vaccine? Panvax®H1N1 vaccine is for the prevention of infection by the influenza virus strain causing the current pandemic H1N1 influenza (also known as ‘swine flu’).
How is the vaccine different from CSL’s ordinary seasonal vaccine? Panvax®H1N1 vaccine contains a fragment from the killed influenza virus strain that has been determined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be the strain responsible for the circulating pandemic flu. The seasonal CSL influenza vaccine contains three flu strains.
The vaccine does not contain any live virus.
Apart from the influenza virus strains, the ingredients in Panvax®H1N1 are the same as the CSL ordinary seasonal flu vaccine (Fluvax®), except that a small amount of the preservative thiomersal has been added to the multi-dose vials to protect against contamination of the vaccine. It is a requirement that multi-dose vials of vaccines contain a preservative to maintain sterility, and thiomersal is the most commonly used preservative.
How effective is Panvax®H1N1 vaccine at preventing pandemic influenza? The results from a clinical trial in healthy adults showed that 95% of the study participants had a good immune response with one dose.
Panvax®H1N1 vaccine will only protect against the circulating strain of the flu that is causing the pandemic.
How soon after getting the vaccine will I be protected from pandemic influenza? Most people have made enough antibodies to give protection 2 to 3 weeks after receiving the vaccine. Protection will last for at least a year. |
